Already the impact of infrastructure development carried out to host them, was evident in the statement by Minister for Innovation and Tourism Industry Development, Kate Jones, that the Commonwealth games venues were booked out for the rest of 2018 within a month of the Games. This doubled the booking hours for those venues, and involved 102 events, 32 of which were of national or international significance. And on top of that was the exposure of the Gold Coast to about 1.5 billion TV viewers worldwide, 16 million of them in Australia as well as activity on various social media channels.

“In July this year, I analysed rental car insurance packages across 17 companies that advertise zero excess and found a great many exclusions. Only one other company offered a zero excess insurance package that equalled the scope of cover of the one I offer to my clients – and that was at a much higher cost. Seven companies offered zero excess packages but did not provide any details to consumers of what they did or did not cover.”

The Exclusions That Might Come as A Surprise

Essington-Wilson lists some of the exclusions that could result in a shockingly high cost to consumers. “Accessories,” for example, are often not covered. They include things like car keys and remotes, and rekeying a car is a costly business.

But it’s not just being careless with keys that could turn out expensive. One of the “zero excess” companies Essington-Wilson investigated excluded hail damage from its cover while another had an exclusion on damage caused by a vehicle roll-over. Yet another company took this several steps further and excluded over and underbody damage as well as reversing damage, tyres, and keys, and of course, he could not determine anything about the seven who provided no scope of cover information at all.

The cost of overnight accommodation following an accident is also very rarely covered. “Only one other company besides ours offered this benefit,” says Essington-Wilson, “and it offered a lower allowance, and at a higher price than we do.”

The Cost of Comprehensive Cover

While the list of exclusions on many zero excess insurance packages offered by car hire companies may seem shocking, most of us would expect that car rental businesses offering the real thing would have very expensive insurance.

But with a little financial mastery, Essington-Wilson has bucked the system. I suspect a similar outcome would apply in most other areas”, Essington-Wilson added.

International visitors to the Gold Coast are rising in numbers, and peak season starts soon. Gold Coast Family Car Rentals CEO, Darryl Essington-Wilson, has issued a warning to foreign visitors visiting the Gold Coast during the upcoming high season. And that is to watch out for hidden fees which are added to some credit and debit card transaction charges when they are used in other countries.

He said that fees added by some banks might come as a shock to car rental customers. And that could even be the case when they hire cars from his Gold Coast Family Car Rentals business, which has done its best to keep the rental charges as fair as possible. Credit Cards

Not every card holds the same fees for transactions overseas, some include fee add-ons in one area and not another, and add-on charges can differ between credit unions and banks. Swiping a foreign credit card for cash at an ATM in another country can bring on withdrawal fees averaging at around 4%, even if there is usually no charge added to the same credit card on home soil. And not all credit cards offer reimbursement of these ATM operator charges.

Currency conversion fees could cost anywhere between 2 and 4%. And any delay in settling the credit card balance in time, which could occur while away from home, could see more interest added to the already bigger total.

Travel and Debit Cards

While international travellers who use debit cards may have fewer problems than credit card users, they may still face the addition of a foreign transaction (or currency conversion) fee of somewhere between 1 and 3% when purchasing. And there could be international ATM fees of between 1 and 5 % when drawing cash, plus separate charges issued by the local ATM operators. Sometimes these duplicated ATM fees will be refunded by the home bank, and sometimes not.

While travel cards might seem to be the ideal answer, Darryl warns that some card providers might start adding charges if the card is left idle for several months between trips, and, at the same time, charge cancellation fees should the cards be cancelled to avoid those charges.

Pay in Local Currency

Darryl also warns visitors to reject suggestions that they pay in their home country’s currency when settling their account. If they accept the suggestion, they could sometimes find themselves settling a payment fattened up by a poor exchange rate and a merchant fee, as well as a conversion fee, in addition to any bank fees the transaction could involve, so enlarging the payment still further. He advises that the best way to avoid these piled-on costs is to stick to paying in the local currency and to check bills carefully before swiping the card.

Opened in 1986, the sand bypass system was one of the biggest infrastructure projects of the 1980’s and played an important role in the development of Gold Coast Tourism. An ambitious and expensive project for its time, the bypass system was an innovation that really helped to spark a tourism boom in the region. “This behind-the-scenes feat of engineering really has been pivotal to the development of the Gold Coast. The investment in the seaway development has really paid off, as its contributed in no small way to the development of all the water-based industries in the region, such as whale watching and fishing charters,” says Essington-Wilson.

Located on the Southport Spit, the bypass system operates by pumping sand through a pipe below the seaway, via pumps buried two metres beneath the sand. The sand is dumped onto South Stradbroke island, keeping the channel open at the mouth of the Nerang River and the seaway safe and clear for craft. The pumps collect 500 000 cubic metres of sand every year. The sand bypass system is earmarked for a $3.35 million upgrade in 2019, when works will begin to replace the jetty’s concrete deck.

“The Southport Bar was incredibly dangerous for craft until the Seaway was opened in 1986. The Seaway now allows safe passage for both recreational and commercial vessels between the Broadwater and the ocean. It is also a popular spot for many tourists and I highly recommend a visit. This is another prime example of the commitment local council has to improving our surrounds. With summer plans underway and the festive season almost upon us, holiday traffic is will soon be making its way onto Gold Coast Roads. Darryl Essington-Wilson, CEO of Gold Coast Family Car Rentals says that, other than ensuring your vehicle is properly roadworthy, holiday road safety is a mindset we should all adopt.

“It’s not just a matter of how safely you drive – you need to remember that you’re sharing the road with other people who might not be alert, who may be upset about something, who might be intoxicated, who might simply be reckless, or who may be texting” he says.

Darryl feels that getting the defensive driving message across could save lives this festive season. The first step, he says, is to realise that accidents happen very quickly. It’s not always possible to avoid them no matter how alert you are.

“To begin with, buckle up,” he says, “and make sure your kids are in proper child seats and wearing their safety belts too. Twenty percent of the people who die in crashes weren’t wearing their seatbelts. Don’t let this be you or your kids.”

Darryl also recommends that drivers constantly assess the response time available to them. A second’s extra time and a few metres of extra space between cars can prevent tragedy. “Ask yourself whether you will be able to respond in time if an emergency were to occur on the road in front of you. I am a staunch believer in the 2 second rule (3 seconds at 80Kph or more), stay at least this distance behind the car in front of you.”

Right of way often gives drivers a false sense of security. Other drivers can make mistakes, and blind trust in your right of way could be dangerous. “Never just assume an intersection is safe because you have the right of way,” says Darryl, adding that he grew up with a road rule of “give way to the driver on your right, and the fool on your left.”

He warns that the seconds just after a traffic light has changed are particularly dangerous: “If the light has just turned green, there could be someone who thought they’d make it over on the amber gunning across as fast as they can.”

He further advises that when you stop behind other cars at an intersection, make sure that you can see a metre of road surface behind the rear wheels of the car in front of you. If someone hits you in the rear end, you are unlikely to be pushed far enough forward to hit the car in front of you.

When the traffic is heavy, and the weather is sultry, it’s all too easy to grow impatient behind the wheel. If you find yourself tempted to drive aggressively, it’s time you found a spot to pull over and regain your sangfroid, says Darryl. “Aggressive driving means taking chances. Taking chances means an increased likelihood of accidents. Keep it calm.”

Finally, Darryl warns those who are taking to the roads for long distances to be extra cautious of the consequences of driver fatigue. “It’s especially dangerous if you’re driving during times when you’d ordinarily be asleep,” warns Darryl. “If you’re travelling a fair distance for your holiday, consider the wisdom of flying instead. You can always get an affordable rental car once you arrive.”
